With the successful conclusion of ITB China 2026, the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) once again experienced a highly productive gathering marked by meaningful exchange, connection, and collaboration with industry partners, destinations, and member companies. More than a single event, this year's edition reflected ATTA's steadily expanding presence in China, a market the association increasingly views as central to the global future of adventure travel.

ATTA's engagement in China has grown well beyond a once-a-year appearance. With dedicated Asia-Pacific team members based in the region, a recurring presence at ITB China, and a growing roster of Chinese and China-focused member companies, the association is building lasting, on-the-ground relationships rather than episodic ones. ITB China 2026 showcased that momentum, with ATTA expanding both its exhibition footprint and its program of off-floor events designed to connect members and partners across the country.

This year, ATTA participated alongside three member companies—Benchmark Adventure, Heritage Expeditions, and WeVenture Travel—jointly showcasing at the event. Centered on the fast-growing global trend of adventure travel, the shared ATTA adventure pavilion highlighted diverse products from different destinations and brands, as well as opportunities for in-destination experiences and international collaboration tailored to the Chinese market.

Throughout the exhibition, ATTA engaged in detailed conversations with industry partners, destination organizations, travel trade professionals, and media representatives, further reinforcing the continued enthusiasm and strong interest within the Chinese market for high-quality, sustainable, and experience-driven travel.

Signals From the Chinese Market

Chang Lipeng, Associate at Benchmark Adventure, observed a continued rise in attention toward outdoor, adventure, and eco-tourism across the industry. From traditional travel agencies and bespoke travel designers to specialist outdoor clubs and online platforms, there is a clear shift toward emphasizing sustainability and immersive value in both product development and destination storytelling. This trend reflects how outdoor and adventure travel is gradually moving from a niche segment to a broader industry consensus, gaining increasing priority in both product design and marketing strategies.

Michiel Stavast, Founder of WeVenture Travel, also shared that returning to ITB China was particularly inspiring. Compared with previous years, there has been a noticeable increase in demand for customized, slow-paced, nature-oriented, and small-group travel experiences, becoming a shared preference among many buyers and industry stakeholders.

AdventureCONNECT x SITE Night

ATTA's expanded presence was felt well beyond the exhibition floor. In collaboration with SITE China, ATTA co-hosted the AdventureCONNECT x SITE Night ITB China 2026. The event brought together professionals from both the adventure travel and incentive travel sectors, fostering cross-industry and cross-cultural dialogue in a relaxed and open setting. Member companies not only established new connections but also exchanged insights on future collaboration, product innovation, and emerging market trends.

ATTA Asia-Pacific Director Hannah Pearson shared that it was a pleasure to see ATTA members from around the world come together in Shanghai for the AdventureCONNECT event. The open and welcoming atmosphere once again demonstrated the strong sense of community and vitality within the ATTA network, and the growing interest in that community in China.

Isaac Wilson, Sales & Marketing Manager at Heritage Expeditions, noted that ITB China 2026 was highly rewarding for the company, and much of this success was made possible through the support and connections within the ATTA community. Exhibiting alongside like-minded partners such as WeVenture and Benchmark added further value to the experience.

He added that the ATTA adventure pavilion, located in a central area of the exhibition hall, provided strong visibility and numerous high-quality networking opportunities. ATTA-organized off-floor events such as AdventureCONNECT further strengthened collaboration and deeper industry connections.

Insights and a Panel on Sustainable Destinations

During the event, Hannah Pearson also presented the latest global and China-focused insights on adventure travel trends, offering valuable perspectives on evolving traveler demand and destination opportunities for the region.

In a subsequent panel discussion, Miya Liu from the ATTA APAC team moderated a conversation with representatives from the Sarawak Tourism Board, the Bureau of Culture and Tourism of Yushu Prefecture, Qinghai Province, and S-cape Partners Italy. The discussion explored how adventure travel can contribute new development pathways for rural and remote destinations in the context of growing global emphasis on sustainability.

Unlike traditional mass tourism, adventure travel does not necessarily aim for the highest visitor numbers, but instead focuses on high-quality experiences, community engagement, and long-term value. This exchange further highlighted the industry's strong commitment to sustainable development, place-based experiences, and cross-sector collaboration.

Looking Ahead

ITB China is not only an industry showcase but also a reflection of ATTA's deepening, long-term commitment to the Chinese and broader Asian adventure travel markets. As the association continues to expand its presence in the region and increasingly diverse international and local partners build meaningful connections, ATTA looks forward to further exploring opportunities in industry exchange, international collaboration, destination development, and member co-creation, working together with partners in China to advance the growth of adventure travel on the global stage.
